Who Loves Instant Coffee?
Even with a lot of coffee manufacturers selling whole or ground coffee for brewing, you’ll never see instant coffee go out of fashion. And why is that? It’s because instant coffee is the quickest, most convenient solution to your coffee craving needs.
Of course it doesn’t beat pot-brewed coffee. But for people who are in a rush, instant coffee offers a less time-consuming alternative. No need to wait for water to boil and the coffee to finish brewing, you just need to mix the coffee, cream, sugar, and water together and you’ve got your coffee in 15 seconds.
But if you look at it, the only things you get from instant coffee is that it consumes less time in preparation, it weighs less than a bag of whole coffee, and it has a longer shelf life as opposed to whole coffee. You don’t actually get the same rich flavors and aromas as you would with brewed coffee. Want to know the reason why?
Instant coffee is manufactured by boiling the beans. In doing so, the coffee flavor is extracted from the beans. It is then freeze dried of spray dried to give you the powdered coffee you so frequently enjoy.
Spray drying may be cheaper, but because the coffee extract is exposed to heat again, more of the coffee’s taste is lost in the process. Freeze drying, on the other hand, may be more expensive, but it produces a more flavorful variety of instant coffee. This is why when given a choice, freeze-dried instant coffee should be your choice, to get as close to the actual coffee taste as possible.
Take note that instant coffee can never be a close competition to conventional brewed coffee. If you’re really looking for that strong, brewed coffee taste, you just a little more time to brew your own batch. After all, what’s waking up a couple of minutes earlier if it would mean drinking a perfect cup of coffee in the morning?
